A late bloomer that was originally pigeon-holed as a shooting guard, Dennis Johnson found his footing and cemented his legacy as a point guard for the revered Boston Celtics. Capable of being either an athletic scorer, or the pass first play-maker, DJ’s greatness came from his discipline and versatility on the court. Far from being a decent complementary player, he was a key component in three of their championship runs – even winning Finals MVP in 1979.

19. Tim Hardaway

Tim Hardaway is remembered largely for two things. Firstly, as being a member of the TMC trio as a member of the Golden State Warriors with Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullin. Secondly, for his super simple but absurdly effective crossover dribble. As a willing passer and the ability to get to the rim at will, Hardaway was one of the scariest point guards of the 90s.

18. Damian Lillard

Proving that anytime he is on the court is “Dame Time”, Lillard has developed a reputation for late game heroics and clutch shooting. Do not mistake his scoring prowess for him being a one trick pony however, Lillard applies pressure to defenses with timely passes, deep shooting and speedy drives. His ability to confound defenses all but guarantees his spot on this list even as his career progresses.

17. Kyrie Irving

With lightning speed handles and the most extensive lay-up package in NBA history, Irving is a point guard extraordinaire. With the ability to pull up and shoot from anywhere and find the open man almost anywhere on the court, Kyrie is defender’s nightmare.

16. Nate Archibald

Before Allen Iverson was heralded for being the biggest little guy on the court, there was Tiny Archibald. Archibald was a ferocious competitor despite his slight frame. Tiny won the scoring title and led the league in the same year (1973), proving that he was a versatile threat on offense.
